Trying all different depictions of Mary on for size.

As an artist, I love to imagine the mother of God across different cultures, within different times, inside different faces. Each time it gives me a different perspective on the many facets of her experience.

Portraits of Florida

Experiments with acrylic on paper. Born out of inspiration by Kristin Greene's photography, they have expanded into an ongoing project.

I especially love the messiness of boundaries in these pieces, and the lack of straight lines or clean edges. I believe that art can make the most impact when it's allowed the space to breathe and this is one of my favorite ways to do so.

You can't communicate form without shadow. It often takes completely unexpected shapes and intensities and is one of the biggest detractors when it comes to working from photos: no matter what, if you're working from a photo instead of life, then you're missing out on some funky details.

I adore finding secret colors and glowing patterns in the shadows of everyday objects.

Shadow Work

Project Gardenia

When a dear friend of mine had a bathroom under construction, I saw an opportunity.

I gathered references, completed studies, and mixed latex paints to complete a mural on three walls of her bathroom. I loved finding butter yellows and phthalo blues hiding in the white petals, and adding soft suggestions of leaves throughout.

Cloudscapes

I've always envied places with mountains. Florida, while abundant in unique wildlife, is sorely lacking even in modest hills.

It's hard to get a sense of nature's scale when you're not standing in the presence of a mountain, but I've found that Florida has its own moody, occasional way of getting that sense across - in our dramatic, lively cloudscapes. They're tricky to portray with their variety of textures, but I've come to enjoy the challenge over the course of a few pieces.
